Fin mounted on Hull is very important component of ship, which helps in maneuvering the ship in particular direction. It is very important to calculate the forces and moments acting on the Fin body during the time of its rotation, which helps in defining various design aspects of Fin. This can be achieved in CFD, which provides detailed information about the forces and moments acting on Fin during the time of its rotations.
Transient moving mesh flow analysis of Fin was carried out to extract the forces and moments acting on it during the time of rotation. The main challenge in analyzing the Fin was to set appropriate parameters for moving mesh deformation and extraction of forces and moments by appropriate method. CFD helped in determining the forces and moments acting on Fin in all three axial directions. Also, torque acting on Fin body pivotal point was evaluated for different time instants. A separate script was developed for storing the time history of forces and torques generated. Same analysis was carried out on various Fin designs.
